GPS - Global Positioning System

Fundamentals.

The GPS is a space-based radio-positioning and time transfer system. The GPS has three major segments: Space Division, Control Segment, and User Equipment Division. As a universal positioning system, GPS provides several characteristics not found in other existing equipment: extremely accurate (3-dimensional) position, velocity and time (PVT) determination; a worldwide common grid easily converted to other local datum; passive, all weather operation; real-time and continuous information;

  • NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Joint Program Office (JPO): JPO provides the coordination of GPS and runs the ground and space segments. So their web site provides information from the first hands. Contains comprehensive technical libraries, including GPS signal characteristics, GPS System segments, GPS Time Information, etc. It is a "must see" web site.
  • Global Positioning System - very comprehensive collection of materials developed by Peter H. Dana, Ph.D., Consultant Electronic Navigation, Precise Positioning, and Geographic Information; Contains numerous files, diagrams, pictures.
  • Introduction to GPS Applications - excellent compilation of GPS info and related topics like policy issues, applications, vendors, etc. Developed and authored by John T. Beadles.
  • Navtech Seminars - has been providing technical courses and advanced GPS training since 1984. They offer more than 20 courses on professional GPS, DGPS and related topics. This web site contains excellent book selection on GPS.
  • The GPS Resource Library - source of links to online Internet Mapping Programs, GIS (Geographic Information Services), Grid Overlays, DGPS, GPS resellers, GPS manufacturers etc.

  • Digital Angel Corporation: The exclusive licensee under U.S. patents for Personal Tracking and Recovery Systems and In-building Location Systems. Their products combines GPS location with bio-sensor technologies and provides phone and e-mail alerts to subscribers: emergency alert, fall-down alert, wander alert, etc. Enables you to safeguard children, seniors, loved ones.
  • Wherify Wireless, Inc. (formerly World Tracking Technologies) is a privately-held developer of patented wireless location products and services. Products include watch-size locator for kids with build-in GPS system, pager and SafetyLock to prevent unauthorized removal.
  • Argos is a satellite-based location and data collection system dedicated to monitoring and protecting the environment.

  • GPSWorld - monthly publication focusing on global positioning and related technologies. Covers new GPS products, services, innovations. It has many very interesting articles online.
  • ComputerWorld - contains many online GPS related articles. Has easy to use search facility.
  • ITBusiness - offers daily news on the IT industry, including GPS themes.
  • Wireless - very often publishes interesting articles and interviews on GPS subject.
